PEACE IS IMPORTANT BUT THEN, CREDIBLE, FAIR, FREE, VERIFIABLE ELECTION EQUALS PEACE.

PEACE IS IMPORTANT BUT THEN, CREDIBLE, FAIR, FREE, VERIFIABLE ELECTION EQUALS PEACE.

By Armstrong K. Abala

It is good that we are preaching peace, but at what cost is this peace going to come? What must we pay to have this peace in this country during the election of 8th of August 2017?

It is my conclusion that Kenya is a peaceful country as it is now and that what we need is to maintain the peace that we have. However, not fighting also does not translate to availability of peace.

The Kenyan society is a hugely divided nation. This nation is highly divided along tribal lines. Political coalitions are based on tribal mobilizations. There is a sharp divide in this country between the two major political formations in this country; National Super Alliance (NASA) on one side and Jubilee on the other side. In Kenya, you are either Jubilee or NASA.
If you are not fighting for Jubilee, then you are fighting for NASA. This sharp divide has gone a notch higher with Kenyans who support either political formation stopping at nothing to support the formation they support regardless of the truths and lies those formations are peddling.

Kenya has not lost course, Kenya has lost TRUST in itself. Kenyans have lost trust in themselves. Kenyans have lost trust in all institutions. We are in trouble.

This country is built on the pillar of ‘WINNER TAKES IT ALL’ and the ‘LOSER GETS NOTHING’ mentality. This kind of happening cannot allow us live in a cohesive environment because everyone wants to win so that they take all.

For Kenya to chat the path of peace in these forthcoming elections, the Independent electoral and boundaries commission (IEBC) specifically the commissioners must ensure and endeavor to deliver a FREE, FAIR, CREDIBLE AND VERIFIABLE election in Kenya.

I have heard several PEACE messages being broadcast everywhere on mainstream media and even on social media channels. Preaching peace in the forthcoming election. Preaching peace that we have, but I have not heard of any messages preaching a credible, free and fair election; The only thing that can help us maintain the peace that we have.

To our electoral commission led by Bwana Chebukati, please do know that the future of this country is in your hands. Do not lead this country to the path the defunct E.C.K led by late Kivuitu (God rest his soul) led us in 2007/2008. All hopes are on you.

I urge both the major political formation in Kenya; that is Jubilee and NASA to play by the rules and concede defeat if FAIRLY defeated.

My personal plea to the Kenyan people is that no matter the outcome of the coming election, whether your political formation wins or not. Let us remember that we have no other country apart from the one we have now.

Let us remember that we do not have a spare to the one we have. Let us live in harmony and let us MAINTAIN THE PEACE WE HAVE. There is no politician worth dying for.
